Teaching your dog the “go” command might seem simple, but it can make a big difference in your daily life together. This cue teaches your dog to move away from you and settle independently when asked, creating healthier boundaries, improving safety, and building confidence at the same time. For dogs who tend to follow their owners everywhere, learning to enjoy their own space is an important life skill. The “go” command encourages independence and helps them understand that they don’t always need to be right under your feet. It also promotes personal space, which can be especially helpful in tight areas like the kitchen where a curious dog can quickly become a tripping hazard.
Safety is another big benefit. Being able to send your dog away from busy or dangerous areas can prevent accidents, injuries, or them getting into something they shouldn’t. At the same time, teaching this behavior strengthens focus and obedience. Your dog learns to respond to a clear cue, move away with intention, and wait calmly for permission to return. Over time, this independence helps build confidence and reduces anxiety in new or stimulating environments.
Ready to teach it? Here are three easy steps to get you started!
Begin in a narrow space. This allows your dog to naturally move straight away rather than wandering off to the side.
Mark the behavior. The moment they turn away, mark the behavior with an upbeat “yes!” to let them know they made the right choice. This acknowledgment reinforces the action and makes it clearer to the dog what is being rewarded.
Reward the movement! Toss a reward away from you to reinforce the movement and create a positive association with going to their own spot.
Once your dog understands the cue, gradually practice in larger areas and different locations. This helps them generalize the command so “go” works anywhere, not just at home. A small command like this can create calmer routines, clearer communication, and a more confident, independent dog.
